The Selective Secular

I always find it amazing, hypocritical, and bizarre how certain religious groups always love to tell the teenagers such things as:

That secular muisc is evil
That rock and roll will send your soul to hell.
That music will cause you to get out of control and murder someone
…..

However, what do their parents listen to? Music that was considered ’secular’ when they were teenagers that their parents told them would send them to hell. I find it amazing how Pentecostals only listen to Southern Gospel and denounce all secular music as evil but they will listen to Country and Western music that talks about wifebeaters, wifecheaters, and losing the virginity in the backseat of a 63 Ford Galaxie. I find it amazing how Baptists will only listens to hymns done in a classical connotation and denounce all secular music as evil but will listen to orchestra done in the 1400’s by the ‘rebels’ of the time that was pronounced as evil.

The problem here is that it’s not secular music that is seen as evil, it’s a specific secular music that is seen as evil. If they really believed that secular music was evil, then they would be sinning by listening to that country and western, orchestra, or any other genre of music. It is also amazing that the same patterns repeat from generation to generation.

The more that things change, the more they stay the same.

  1. There were no orchestras in the 1400’s. The modern orchestra really didn’t take shape until the early Baroque period (early 1600’s), although there were brass ensembles and string ensembles in the 1500’s.

Almost all music was sacred NOT secular until Monteverdi’s opera in the early 1600’s, “Orpheo.” And, not until the 1800’s did secular music overtake sacred music in quantity.

I disagree with you on rock. It is very destructive IMO.

However, your point about C&W is well taken.

    I HATE C&W…yuch!
