What God Thinks of Annulment?

2 June 2004 One Comment

I was reading the story that bought up the now famous Britney Spears annulment to her ex childhood friend and I thought about something.

What does God really think about annulment since the word is not mentioned in the Bible?

Annulment is defined as “The invalidation of a marriage, as for nonconsummation, effected by means of a declaration stating that the marriage was never valid.” However, we see that in God’s eyes, marriage is valid because in the marriage, the man and woman join together to become one. Annulment is not like divorce where there is no denying that a marriage happened and two parties are seperating for life. Therefore, can we ask the questions of:

Is annulment sin?

If a man or woman whose marriage was annuled by a court of law decides to remarry, would that man or woman be considered an adulterer / adultress in God’s eyes?

Interesting thoughts to ponder.

If they were annulling based on non-consummation of the marriage, would they already be “one flesh”?

If annullment was based on other grounds (non-competence of one/both parties, consent obtained by duress, etc.) and the marriage had been consummated, arguably the couple would already be “one flesh”…
