From ‘Instant’ to ‘Extreme’

30 September 2004 No Comment

Driving on the way to work this morning, I began to think about the differences between my generation and today’s high-school / college aged people and one thought stuck with me throughout the day:

My generation wanted their luxuries, spirituality, etc instantly while the generation of todays high-school / college aged people want extreme versions of the same things.

Where in my generation, instant coffee and instant breakfast correlated and analogized into instant blessings from God by ‘blabbing it and grabbing it’, the high-school / college aged people have extreme sports, extreme colas, extreme music, extreme deodorant, and desire a “X-treme G-Zuz” that can be discovered by purchasing the eXtreme tEen Bible, .

What do we and they want, the instant or eXtReMe or Jesus? If we decide on the instant or X-treme, it will never satisfy our hunger and never quench our thirst. Like fast-food combos that went from regular size to ‘value size’ for an additional 39 cents or ’super value size’ for an additional 99 cents, we will in our quest to satisfy our growing appetite for all things spiritual pay an additional cost to get a ’super value size’ version of someone else’s theoretical Christianity and end up more hungry and bloated theologically with no worthwhile substance. When ’super value size’ will no longer fill our expanded stomachs and our expanded spiritual voids, someone else will create the ‘ mega value size’ above and beyond the ’super value size’ thinking more is better but yielding the same results.

The cycle will then repeat. We get fatter and fatter and we are still Hungry.
