Thoughts About Keith Green
Is Keith Green the most anointed Christian musician to have ever walked planet Earth? I have really wondered that myself as I have seen many forums devote threads where his fans literally come to the point of idolizing the man to the point where Green was viewed as a perfect person who deserves some kind of ‘Christianized Sainthood’.
I am one of those who find Keith Green to be over-exalted to the point of idolotry and perfection. However, when I read the No Compromise book and reading accounts from his friends via magazine interviews posted online, some of his friends state and you get the impression that Keith got very legalistic near the end of his life and had almost gotten to the point where those who had different opinions and convictions than him were seen as ‘compromised’ and ’selling their soul’. That is a very dangerous place to be.
The lyrics are beautiful and anointed to read in and of itself. However, he could not musically sing worth a lick and his voice comes across as obnoxious on his records. At that time in Christian music, the 2nd Chapter of Acts were a better vocal group and I feel had more anointing. I cringe when I hear Keith Green’s voice. I relax and harmonize when I hear the voices of the 2nd Chapter of Acts.
I have really wondered if the combination of the near hyper-legalism on Keith’s part combined with the near idoltry status many Christians exalted him with, did God allow him to die in order to get the church focused on Christ and Christ alone? I have wondered if Keith Green was alive today if the hyper-legalism would have caused a great deal of damage to the church body much like the Shepherding movement had done years prior to his death and that have been a reason that Green died? I have wondered if Keith Green was still alive that he would have turned into another David Wilkerson who preaches a great Word at times but sometimes goes excessively overboard with some of the things he said?
