Are The Christian Republicans Really Spiritual Democrats?

16 January 2005 3 Comments

Throughout this weekend, I have had many thoughts about church life and also the influence of the church on society today. As I thought about this in the midst of some ‘hate’ e-mail from people who disagreed with something said about a concept they idolize and responding in another Christian forum about the chasm between clergy and laity, I came to a restounding conclusion that the Christian Republicans who push the agendas of the religious right are really spiritual version of the Democrats they claim to despise and hate ‘in God’s name’?

I thought about Neo in the Matrix who had to make choices between the blue pill and the red pill, between the left door and the right door, and eventually between life to save himself and death to save others? I also thought about this line from the Rush song Distant Early Warning that even though it applied to nuclear holocost and mutural assured destruction, I felt fit very well with what I am about to say

Left and rights of passage
Black and whites of youth
Who can face the knowledge
That the truth is not the truth?
Obsolete
Absolute

Why am I saying that the Christian Republicans who push the agendas of the religious right are really spiritual version of the Democrats they claim to despise and hate ‘in God’s name’? Let us look at some interesting concepts and compare the two:

Wow, you said a mouthful. Regarding “Hate Crimes” – i cringed to read that. It sounds like much of that was written from personal experience? If so, I am terribly sorry to read that. Perhaps the individual or individuals involved weren’t wearing their “WWJD” bracelets at the time?

    peace to you,

Your preaching to the choir here. I’m a politically liberal christian who was trained in science and literary analysis, but who atends a small somwhat fundemental, very evangelical, and ovewhelmingly republican church. I worry sometimes that they will all turn on me one day. Just kidding, sort of. For me there is no choosing sides, being true to my understanding of scripture puts me where I am and I let everyone else worry about how to classify me. But I wonder sometimes, will the fact that I’m a christian brother carry more weight than my political beliefs or my interpretation of Genesis? I have managed to fellowship with people that I would have shunned as a radical youth – can they do the same. So far they have, so I have hope for the church in general.
