Wanton Worship

18 July 2005 2 Comments

Michael Spencer over at Internet Monk has written an excellent article about the state of worship (influenced by this article ) and how sometimes we feel as if our worship is actually lying to God.

However, I’ve figured out what the church is doing. It seems as if the church is peddling and catering to the Attention Deficit Disorder generation instead of preaching and worshipping a powerful and healing God who can cure Attention Deficit Disorder and refocus out heart, soul, mind, and body back to Him.

I’m tired of “Cheerleaders For Christ” and the worship turned high-school pep rally. I’m tired of sing ‘love songs to Jesus’. Jesus is my Savior, not my erotic lover. He is Lord, I am His servant. Period!!! I’m tired of singing neutered songs that are filled with pronouns that I can not determine if I am singing to a lover or to Christ. I’m tired as if the worship experience is turned from an outpouring of our gratitute to an episode of a Saturday morning kiddie cartoon. As Spencer wrote this article, I thought about this REM song entitled “Shiny Happy People”:

Shiny happy people laughing

Meet me in the crowd
People people
Throw your love around
Love me love me
Take it into town
Happy happy
Put it in the ground
Where the flowers grow
Gold and silver shine

Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing

Everyone around love them, love them
Put it in your hands
Take it take it
There’s no time to cry
Happy happy
Put it in your heart
Where tomorrow shines
Gold and silver shine

Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing

And that is the way we are supposed to be per the worship ‘experts’. Shiny Happy Idiot People singing Kumbaya as we lie to God about his presence, dominion, and surrender in our own life. Once again, the Pretender shows his ugly head as we sing songs about ‘going to the enemy’s camp and take back what was stolen from us’ in a ‘weekend warrior’ mentality while we can not transfer the Sunday sermon into the Monday Meat to the Saturday Sanctification and wrestle with temptations we dare not tell anyone about in fear of losing respect, prestige, and glory.

Jesus said that he is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We are also commanded to worship in Spirit and in Truth!!! Not lying to God. Quit being the Pretender and start being the Contender and worship God in Spirit and in Truth.

It’s all crap…the organised worship lying…happens all the time!
    My spirit reels from it.
When I’m broken and I utter in tongues mixed with my own language a little song somehow when for example driving the car and I know and God knows it’s real, it seems to me that I’m worshipping.
Going for it with others (not hundreds necessarily…but those who know how to release their spirit) singing in tongues and getting lost in it is also worship…but there are no limits in this release other than the limits of our own imaginative, creative approach…appropriately Spirit-led banging on pans, stamping feet, going into the garden and getting a tree branch to shake making a nice rustling sound…whatever…twanging elastic….releasing your and others’ spirits in Christ…why have formulas for worship about when and where?? No FORM..Only essence!
Also lying still, on one’s own, no words, just giving your spirit….
