The Turning Around, Part Four
It was announced at ‘the church’ today in ‘the church bulletin’ that ‘the session’ has decided to discontinue the ‘ultra-contemporary’ service that was being held on Saturday evening. In the past, ‘the church’ had bought into the ’seeker-sensitive’ philosophy that it had to have services that catered to the niche-market of most everyone instead of services that preached the sermon of the Lord.
I had went to this service numerous times off and on when for some reason I could not go on Sunday mornings or when I would feel ‘inadequate’ about attending Sunday morning services.
It had it’s time and purpose but as ‘the derailment’ was taking place, the obvious signs of ‘the derailment’ really began to manifest in this service as the music went from being the same to different more syrupy music with lessening theology and doctrine to music that focused more on the esoteric and experiential. Even though the sermon text was the same, the methodology was ‘dumbed down’ and wholesome meat was turned into milk that eventually soured. In fact, it got to the point where I preferred the early Sunday morning service because the songs were more theologically in line and the sermon was taught more in depth.
I believe there is a whole lot more to come and we have not even began to complete the U-Turn yet…….
