There is a very intriguing part of the Springsteen song where the gambler admits that:
I’m a thief in the house of love
And I can’t be trusted
In order to be changed, we must first admit that we are that thief that has turned the house of love into a den of thieves with our money changers and our Charismatic casinos. Then we must go and sin no more because after this happens, God does something that some may consider as being a risk or consider as gambling.
He trusts us. He trusts us by empowering us with the power to heal the sick, to tread on scorpions, to cast out devils, and to ‘go ye therefore into all the nations….’ He trusts us to rule, govern, and establish the church as the house of love and run the church with emphasis on doctrine, teaching, fellowship, assistance to the poor, widowed, and orphaned, and ministry. Most importantly, God trusts us with the Holy Spirit by allowing the Holy Spirit to be filled within us.
It’s not a crapshoot. It’s not done by Lady Luck, a roll of the dice, a quarter in the slot machine, the ball on the roulette wheel, an ace and a King. It’s not a gamble. We don’t have to have the ace up our sleeve, the money on the table, the weighed dice, nor the repetitive tugging of the one armed bandit. God is a sure fire sovereign, omnipotent, provident King of Kings and Lord of Lords that is guaranteed to supply our needs (not wants) according to his riches (and not our buying and bribing) in Glory. God’s will will be done no matter what. Another coin in the offering plate, another chapter read at night, another ten minutes in prayer, a $66.12 donation to unlock the Psalms 66:12 blessing, etc. will not change God’s mind and bring down the liturgical lottery.
