Victors or Vicarious Vampires
In Leviticus 17:10-14 the Scriptures state:
And whatever man of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell among you, who eats any blood, I will set My face against that person who eats blood, and will cut him off from among his people. For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’ Therefore I said to the children of Israel, ‘No one among you shall eat blood, nor shall any stranger who dwells among you eat blood.’
“Whatever man of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell among you, who hunts and catches any animal or bird that may be eaten, he shall pour out its blood and cover it with dust; for it is the life of all flesh. Its blood sustains its life. Therefore I said to the children of Israel, ‘You shall not eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off.’
Are we doing this spiritually? Yes we are. If we are not careful, the ones doing the vicarious rejoicing may one day end up being the ones who are cut off from God’s midst.
In fact, what is also intriguing is that in a couple of weeks, it will be the fifth anniversary of 9-11-01. Will we parrot the same words said five years ago referring to Falwell blaming the gays or God punished us for eight years of the Clintons?
We were never meant to be vicarious. We were meant to be victors. There are many differences but the main one is the blood. One eats the blood and flesh like a vulture and carnivore in order to survive. The other partakes of the flesh (symbolized via bread) and drinks of the blood (symbolized by wine/grape juice) in order to partake of the Lord’s Supper as detailed in 1 Corinthians 11:17-33. The vicarious depend on permanent death to ensure his salvation with Christ while the victor who accepts and places his faith in Christ is already ensured by the shedding of Jesus’ blood and His rising up on the third day to give us victory over sin, death, hell, and the grave. The vicarious is redeemed by the tragedy of others while the victor in Christ is redeemed by the triumph of Jesus on the third day.
The worse thing is that in order for the vicarious to feel loved by God, there must be a constant revolving door of tragedy to come and go because their belief system of salvation/security is coming and going at the same time. Like the christian who lives from spiritual crisis to spiritual crisis to judge God’s favor on them by how much the devil attacks them, the vicarious has to live from tragedy to tragedy and use this as his measurement of God’s view of them.
The victor knows without a shadow of a doubt that the love of God and his salvation was settled once and for all when he first believed and asked Jesus into their heart and their faith does not waiver everytime a tragedy comes forth into their life. The victor knows Jesus is always by his side during the good times and during the bad times when it rains on both the just and the unjust
I will leave you with this one last statement.
Vicarious vultures prey on the tragedies of other people. Victors pray for God to bring compassion, grace, mercy, and relief to those suffering through a tragedy.
