Per this article from Rocky Mountain News, not only will you have to be a member of the church to vote for the new senior pastor (normal in most churches), but you have to prove that you contributed financially to the church in 2005 to be eligible to vote.

    I am appalled at the church’s logic. Everywhere I ever attended church the bylaws went like this:

    To vote – one must be a member in good standing. Members under church discipline gave up voting rights for the time period of discipline.

    If not attending for one year – you go from “member” to “inactive member in good standing” and lose voting privilege until proof of attendance but still remain a member.

    If not attending for three years – you go from ‘inactive member’ to not being a member at all.

    If you were a member who then became disabled, confined, etc. but notified the church of your condition, then you were still a member and fell under the care / visitation ministry

    One church I attended would deem the meeting ‘members only’, ask non-members to leave, not allow anyone else into the sanctuary (if you are late, tough), and make everyone sit on the left side of the sanctuary. Then call out the members names like roll call in school to determine who was present or absent and wrote it down for the record. Also, after your name was called, you would move to the right side of the sanctuary. After roll call, all people on the left side would be sternly rebuked by the pastor for not leaving when asked and the pastor would ask them to leave under escort of the deacons.
