    I am trying to understand the connection between that song and Charles Finney. Was this some doctrine he taught?

    Charles Finney’s doctrine of perfectionalism taught that if a born again Christian sinned, his spiritual status in the eyes of God changed from being ’saved’ to being ‘unsaved’ until he confessed his sin and repented to which he would be saved again.

    Therefore, this scenerio could exist under Finneyism. If you were to fail to see a stop sign, did not stop, and ran through an intersection and before impact, said a cuss word realizing that you were about to wreck, crashed your car, got knocked out unconscious and died (never regaining consciousness to confess your sin). Because you broke the law by failure to yield, you sinned by not submitting to govermental authority. Because you said the curse word, that was coarse language and by not confessing those sins before you died, you would be in Hell per Finney’s theology.

    In other words, if you got saved many years ago and repented, that was not good enough. It was conditional based on your spiritual state at the very last moment of life not on the salvation that was settled long ago. The Bible states to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, not your salvations.

    The Bible tells God’s children to repent, never to get ‘re-saved’
