What Happened On That Saturday?

I find it interesting that the Bible never mentions anything about what happened on the Saturday after Jesus was crucified and before the Sunday that he rose from the dead except for these verses out of Matthew 27:62-66Open Link in New Window….

On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.’ Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.”

Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.” So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard.

So we know that on Saturday, Jesus’ physical body was still in the tomb and the chief priests and Pharisees secured the tomb and placed a guard at the entrance.

I was doing some research as to why there was no special significance of a holiday in reference to the Saturday. I then learned that the Catholics, Orthodox, and Anglicans actually have their rituals for what is called Holy Saturday.

It appears that Saturday is viewed as being in silence because nothing really happened in the physical realm on Saturday except that the upholders of the law (Pharisees) that criticized Jesus for ‘working on the Sabbath’ (Luke 13:10-17Open Link in New Window) actually did some work on that day by moving a stone over the entryway to Jesus tomb to try to seal the tomb and placed a security guard there.

I am very surprised that the pentecostals, charismatics, or word of faith televangelists have not tried to create a day called ‘Warfare Saturday’ and make it a day, a mega conference, or sell DVD’s of ’spiritual warfare’ trying to symbolize it to the time Jesus died and arose to imply that something, some dream, some vision, etc. in your life died and would be resurrected back into existence.

But the most important thing about the Easter holiday is not what happened on that Saturday, it was what happened on that Sunday
