1) Radio talk-show host Rich Buhler interviewed Pastor Gary, got the whole pitch, then decided to start the next day with a bit of a joke.

Signed on with how he was so disturbed he checked the station’s morgue for tapes and found (reverb) THIS (/reverb) when played backwards:

“Here it says ‘He is lord’…”
(tape) “Eeeeeeeeshooooooooooorrrrr…”
“Here it says ‘Satan is with you and me’…”
(tape) “Sssssnnnnwwwssoooooooooyyyyeeeeeee…”
A couple more along the same lines, then…

“This was not Led Zeppelin. This was not Black Sabbath. That was… BENNY HESTER! Who I’ve got on the phone right now! (pause) Having spiritual trouble, Benny? Got some secret sin in your life?”
(Benny laughing; then Rich went into the main interview for the half-hour.)

Benny didn’t laugh for long. A lot of listeners only heard what they wanted to hear and spread the Godly Gossip that Benny Hester was a closet Satanist, and Rich Buhler had proved it on the air! Took years for his singing career to recover.

2) “Why do you have to play the records backwards? You can tell where Black Sabbath is coming from when you play them forwards!” — Rich Buhler

3) Christian comedy album “God on Vacation” (no further info) had a parody of Backwards Masking preachers that went something like this:

“Here’s what you hear when played normally:”
(Elevator Muzak)
“But… When played BACKWARDS…”
(Heavy Metal Riffs)

Bit finishes (naturally) with “Stairway to Heaven” backwards:
V.O.: “And you’re pla-a-a-ying…
This re-e-e-cord
Ba-a-a-ckwards!”

4) And the winner of the Craziest Preacher award before Tatted Todd: Some guy who denounced “The Theme From Mr Ed” as Satanic Backwards Masking, that all “secular” music contained Satanic Backwards Messages (TM) and ALL Contemporary Christian Music contained “Praise the LORD!” Backwards Messages.

I remember the backward masking scare!!! Notice that it was always done from vinyl LP’s where the speed could be varied and that stuff stopped when the CD came out

And Dr Demento proved you can karaoke-sing the theme from Gilligan’s Island to “Stairway to Heaven; maybe there’s some significance in that? Lakeland taking that Three Hour Tour to Gilligan’s Isle?
